Voyageurs National Park Camping and Northern Lights
The Ultimate Dark Sky Adventure in Minnesota

There are few places in the United States where you can spend the day exploring pristine wilderness and the evening watching the Northern Lights dance across the sky. Voyageurs National Park is one of them.
Known for its interconnected lakes, remote campsites, and incredible night skies, Voyageurs has become one of the best destinations for Voyageurs National Park camping and Northern Lights viewing. A little planning can make all the difference, helping you find the perfect campsite, the best stargazing locations, and the ideal place to experience the aurora.
At Northern Lights Resort & Outfitting on Lake Kabetogama, we’ve spent decades helping guests experience everything Voyageurs has to offer. In fact, our resort was named after the aurora because we believe this area offers some of the best Northern Lights viewing in Minnesota.
Why Voyageurs National Park Is One of the Best Places to See the Northern Lights
Voyageurs National Park is recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, making it one of the premier places in the country for stargazing and aurora viewing.
With very little light pollution, the skies above Lake Kabetogama become incredibly dark after sunset. On nights with strong solar activity, the Northern Lights can stretch across the horizon in brilliant shades of green, pink, and purple.
Even when the aurora doesn’t appear, visitors are treated to breathtaking views of the Milky Way, countless stars, and seasonal meteor showers.
If you’ve never experienced truly dark skies, Voyageurs is unforgettable.
If you’re planning your trip around the aurora, our Ultimate Guide to Seeing the Northern Lights in Northern Minnesota explains the best seasons, ideal viewing conditions, and what to expect during your stay. Camping in Voyageurs National Park
Camping in Voyageurs is unlike most national parks.
Nearly every campsite is only accessible by water, creating a peaceful wilderness experience that feels far removed from everyday life.
If this is your first camping trip inside the park, our Guide to Campsites in Voyageurs National Park walks you through everything you need to know before reserving your site.
Dock Equipped Campsites
If you’re bringing your own fishing boat or renting one during your stay, look for campsites with docks.
Dock sites make it much easier to:
- Load and unload coolers
- Access fishing gear
- Tie up your boat overnight
- Explore different areas of the park during your stay
These sites are especially popular with anglers planning multi day fishing adventures.

Paddle In Campsites
Guests looking for a quieter adventure often choose paddle accessible campsites that are perfect for kayaks and canoes.
Some favorite destinations include:
- Echo Island
- Grassy Island Group
- Cutover Island
- Sugar Bush Island
These locations offer peaceful surroundings, excellent wildlife viewing, and an authentic Northwoods camping experience without requiring long paddling distances.
Houseboat Camping
For many visitors, a houseboat offers one of the most unique ways to experience Voyageurs National Park.
Think of it as a floating campsite that moves with you.
Instead of unpacking once, you can explore different bays, beaches, fishing spots, and scenic shorelines while enjoying all the comforts of your floating cabin.
One of the Best Northern Lights Viewing Spots
While there are countless beautiful places inside Voyageurs National Park to watch the aurora, one location consistently stands out.
The day use area at Woodenfrog State Forest Campground is one of our favorite public places to watch the Northern Lights.
Located near the Canadian border on the northern side of Lake Kabetogama, the open shoreline provides expansive views across the water with almost no artificial light nearby.
On nights with strong aurora activity, it’s an incredible place to set up a chair, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and watch the sky come alive.
Many guests also discover they never need to leave the resort.
Because Northern Lights Resort sits directly on Lake Kabetogama with wide open northern-lake-views, guests often enjoy spectacular aurora displays right from the shoreline or even from the deck of their cabin.
It’s one of the reasons the name Northern Lights Resort was chosen for this spot, so many years ago.
Capture the Aurora With Your Camera
Watching the Northern Lights is unforgettable.
Photographing them creates memories you’ll enjoy for years to come.
If you’re bringing a camera, pack:
- A sturdy tripod
- A wide angle lens
- Extra batteries
- A remote shutter release, if available
Many smartphones now include impressive night photography modes that perform surprisingly well during brighter aurora displays.
We’re also excited about expanding photography experiences in the future, including night sky photography workshops that help guests capture the aurora over Lake Kabetogama.

A little preparation makes for a much smoother adventure once you arrive.
