2026 Tips for Fall Colors Near Voyageurs National Park

Fall does not last forever in Northern Minnesota, but that is part of what makes it so special.

Around Lake Kabetogama and Voyageurs National Park, September brings crisp mornings, quiet trails, peaceful water, and forests that slowly trade their summer greens for brilliant reds, oranges, yellows, and golds. It is one of our favorite times of year to slow down and enjoy the Northwoods.

If you are planning a fall getaway in 2026, timing is important, but knowing where to look can be just as helpful. Some of the best fall views are found from overlooks and trails, while others are waiting along the shoreline or around the next bend in the road.

Here are our tips for finding some of the best fall colors near Voyageurs National Park in 2026.

When Will Fall Colors Peak in Voyageurs National Park in 2026?

There is no way to circle an exact peak color date on the calendar this far ahead. Temperature, rainfall, wind, and other weather conditions all have a say in when the leaves turn each year.

Maples and ashes can bring some of the first reds and oranges. Aspens and birches follow with beautiful golds and yellows, while oaks can provide some of the later color along the lakeshore.

If you are trying to choose your 2026 dates well in advance, the third week of September is historically a good target. With the dryer summer, we anticipate the change of color to arrive earlier. And with that said, warmer temperatures forecasted over Labor Day, may balance out and extend the early show of color. Just remember that Mother Nature keeps her own calendar.

1. Check the Fall Colors Before You Leave Home

Our first tip is simple. Do not rely entirely on the calendar.

If you have some flexibility with your travel dates, watch Minnesota fall color reports as your trip approaches. Colors can develop differently from one area to another, even within the same part of Northern Minnesota.

And do not worry too much about hitting one perfect day. There is usually something beautiful happening throughout the fall season.

2. Head to the Kab Overlook Trail Near Ash River

If you are looking for a fall photo worthy of the trip north, put the Kab Overlook Trail near Ash River on your list.

This is one of our favorite areas for big views, especially because the overlook faces west. Plan your hike later in the day and you may get to watch the setting sun light up an already colorful Northern Minnesota landscape.

For photographers, this is an especially good stop. Golden hour, fall leaves, lake reflections, rocky terrain, and the surrounding wilderness make a pretty good combination. Explore further into the forest and hike the Blind Ash Trail from the same parking lot. As fall progresses with a trail covered with leaves, step with caution as the rocky outcrops and roots are hidden.

Give yourself plenty of time before sunset so you are not rushing along the trail.

3. Do Not Miss the Chief Wooden Frog Loop

Sometimes one of the best adventures is right in your backyard.

The Chief Wooden Frog Day Use Area is within about a mile of Northern Lights Resort & Outfitting, making it an easy addition to your fall getaway. We consider this one of the hidden gems on the shores of Lake Kabetogama with both sweeping views and easy access to the Voyageurs National Park area.

You have a couple of ways to explore. Take a simple, leisurely walk around the point when you want an easy outing, or venture onto the more rigorous trail along the back of the bay.

Either way, keep an eye on the islands. The combination of blue water, colorful shoreline, and islands covered in autumn foliage is hard to beat. It’s a perfect spot for a shorelunch & on a warmer day dig your toes in the sandy beach or take a dip.

How to get there: follow the signs to the Public boat launch. Both trailheads start at the beach and share the parking lot with the public boat launch. This is one of our top picks for guests who want great scenery without spending half the day getting there.

4. Explore the Rainy Lake Area

If you have a little extra time, fan out and explore the Rainy Lake side of Voyageurs National Park.

The Rainy Lake Recreation Trail offers a different way to see the season, with forest, lake, marsh, and rocky scenery along the route. The trail connects International Falls with the Rainy Lake Visitor Center area, and the portion near the visitor center provides an easy way to get outside and enjoy the changing landscape.

It can also make a nice day trip from Lake Kabetogama. Pack some snacks, bring the camera, and make the drive part of the adventure.

Fall is a good excuse to see a side of Voyageurs you may not have explored before.

5. Visit the New Crane Lake Visitor Center

For something new to add to your 2026 fall trip, consider heading toward Crane Lake.

The Crane Lake Visitor Center opened in 2025, giving visitors another reason to explore the southern end of the Voyageurs area. Its setting on higher ground also makes the area worth checking out when you are looking for fall scenery.

The drive itself gives you another chance to see how the colors change as you travel through the Northwoods.

If you have visited Voyageurs many times but tend to stay around Kabetogama and Ash River, this can be a fun way to see somewhere different.

6. Make the Trip to Vermilion Gorge

While you are exploring farther south, add Vermilion Gorge to your list.

Located near Crane Lake, the Vermilion Gorge Trail offers scenic overlooks and a little more adventure for travelers who want to stretch their legs. The trail is about 1.5 miles one way.

Rock, water, forest, and fall color all come together here. It is the kind of place where you will probably want to stop more than once just to take in the view.

Pack water, wear good walking shoes, and give yourself time to enjoy it rather than treating it as another stop to check off the list.

7. Take an Easy Fall Walk on Echo Bay Trail

For a nice walk close to the Kabetogama area, Echo Bay Trail is another option.

The National Park Service describes Echo Bay as an easy trail that passes through deciduous and boreal forests, wetlands, and rocky outcrops. That variety makes it especially interesting in fall as different parts of the forest begin changing at different times.

If your main goal is a big scenic view, however, we would put the Chief Wooden Frog Day Use Area higher on the list.

Think of Echo Bay as a peaceful walk through the fall woods. Think of Chief Wooden Frog as the place to go when you want to stop and say, “Now that’s a view.”

8. See the Fall Colors From the Water

You do not have to hike to find beautiful fall colors around Voyageurs.

In fact, some of our favorite views are from Lake Kabetogama itself.

Fall foliage reflected across calm water can make an ordinary boat ride pretty spectacular. Cruise along the shoreline, explore a quiet bay, or simply take your time looking back toward the colorful forest.

If you are paddling, mornings can be especially peaceful. A kayak or canoe lets you move quietly along the shoreline and enjoy the season at a slower pace.

Keep in mind that boating services begin winding down as fall progresses, and park buoys are typically removed in early October. Always check current park conditions before heading out late in the season.

9. Experience Autumn splendor on a “Bog Walk”

The main bog walk options near Voyageurs National Park are the Tilson Creek Bogwalk near the Rainy Lake Visitor Center and the Orr Bog Walk (Mickey Elverum Bog Walk) located at the Orr Travel Information Center just south of Kabetogama.

Why we recommend this in the fall is for both the unique experience combined with a nice boardwalk path that keeps feet off potentially muddy trails.

Tilson Creek Bogwalk — Located near the Rainy Lake Visitor Center (east of International Falls, MN). This scenic 1-mile winding wooden boardwalk that takes you through a unique boreal bog ecosystem.

Autumn highlights the stunning, changing colors in the tamarack trees (which turn a golden yellow before dropping their needles) alongside unique wetland plants and plush mosses.

Mickey Elverum Bog Walk — Find this boardwalk located approximately a half hour drive south of Kabetogama at the Voyageurs Information Center / Orr Community Center on US 53.

We love this trail for both its accessibility and wildlife watching, along a half-mile loop boardwalk over swampy terrain.

For a quick nature stroll to view spruce bogs, ash swamps, cattail marshes, and carnivorous pitcher plants. Halfway through, a viewing spot opens up to watch for local birds and wildlife.

10. Off the beaten path, literally

Around the corner from Northern Lights Resort lies miles of state “forest roads.” Whether on foot or by OHV, both Kabetogama State Forest and Koochiching State Forest permit OHV riding on the majority of forest Riding the forest roads will give you the opportunity to enjoy leaf peeping and opportunity to a variety of wildlife in our northwoods (see bears, moose, pine martens, lynx, bobcat, wolves, deer and more).

Although the Voyageur Country OHV trail system does not yet connect to Kab, there is a plan in the works to so so. The Voyageur Country ATV Club site and Minnesota DNR Off-Highway Vehicle Riding have good maps and links to additional information.

11. Plan for Cooler Fall Weather

Fall weather in Voyageurs can change quickly.

September averages around 65 degrees for a daytime high and 42 degrees for a low, according to the National Park Service. By October, average temperatures drop to around 52 during the day and 31 at night.

Layers are your friend.

Bring a warm jacket, hat & gloves, good walking shoes, rain gear, and clothing you can add or remove throughout the day. A sunny afternoon can feel wonderful, while the temperature beside the lake after sunset can remind you pretty quickly that winter is not too far away.

For a rainy day activity, pull into the sheltered picnic area at Ellsowrth Rock Gardens by boat or the Kabetogama visitor center to view the National Park film.

That cooler weather is also part of the fun. It makes coming back to a cozy cabin, campfire, or fireplace feel even better.

12 Give Yourself More Than One Day to Chase the Colors

One of our biggest tips is not to make fall color a one stop adventure.

Spend a few days exploring.

You could enjoy an easy walk around Chief Wooden Frog one morning, head toward Ash River for an afternoon hike and sunset, explore Rainy Lake the following day, then make a road trip toward Crane Lake and Vermilion Gorge.

You will see different forests, shorelines, overlooks, and stages of fall color along the way.

Best of all, there is no need to rush back to the city at the end of every adventure. Come back to your cabin, build a fire, make something warm to drink, and decide where tomorrow’s color hunt will take you.

Remember That Peak Color Is Not Everything

Everyone wants to know when peak fall color will happen. We understand why.

But some of our favorite fall days happen before and after the official peak.

Early in the season, bright reds and oranges begin appearing against a backdrop that is still mostly green. Later, golden leaves cover the trails and the remaining colors stand out against evergreens and blue water.

Then there are all the other reasons we love fall around Lake Kabetogama. There are fewer bugs, quieter trails, crisp evenings, beautiful sunsets, campfires, wildlife, fishing, dark skies, and the possibility of catching the Northern Lights.

The leaves are just one part of it.
