1) Woodenfrog State Forest Campground Trails – A Hidden Gem

Don’t let the name fool you—this “hidden gem” is gaining popularity for a reason. Located at the Chief Woodenfrog State Forest Campground, this trail network is easily accessible by car (or boat). Park at the lakeside boat launch in the Day Use area, and you’ll find trailheads on either side of the beach. The trails are easy to navigate, with several bench seats thoughtfully placed along the shoreline, perfect for taking in the views of Lake Kabetogama. The trails feature stunning vistas of the lake, and if you’re hoping to hear the haunting call of a loon or witness the Northern Lights, this is one of the best spots near the Canadian border. For trip planning, it’s approximately a 5 minute drive to the trailhead from Northern Lights Resort.

2) Kabetogama Overlook and Blind Ash Trail Loop

For panoramic views and an easy outing, head to the Kabetogama Overlook. The trail begins at a convenient parking area and is paved and handicap accessible, making it suitable for everyone. For those wanting a bit more adventure, link up with the Blind Ash Trail loop. This loop will lead you through a mixed forest and offer more chances to spot wildlife and great lake views. For trip planning, it’s approximately a 20 minute drive to the trailhead from NLRO.

3) Echo Bay Trail

Situated in the heart of Voyageurs National Park, Echo Bay Trail offers several interconnected loops and spur trails. Perfect for a morning or afternoon hike, this trail network winds through a variety of landscapes, from forested areas to open meadows. The Echo Bay trailhead is located on our Northern Lights Road and an easy walk from Northern Lights Resort. Visit in mid-summer for prime blueberry picking, but be prepared to compete with the local wildlife for the bounty! It’s a great family-friendly option, and the chances of encountering deer or spotting a bald eagle overhead are high. For trip planning, it’s less than one mile to drive to the trailhead from NLRO.

Hikes Accessible by Boat on Lake Kabetogama

1) Ellsworth Rock Garden Trail

One of the most unique hikes accessible only by boat, Ellsworth Rock Garden is located on the Kabetogama Peninsula centrally located near Cutover Island. The dock is handicap accessible with a ramp leading up to the trailhead. Stroll through the rock garden, taking in the intricate sculptures crafted by artist Jack Ellsworth, or venture up the rock terrace trail to the bald-faced cliffs for spectacular views of Lake Kabetogama. Pack a shore lunch, this is the top picnic destination in the park with a covered shelter, grills and picnic tables. This site has a bathroom too! Look for the large eagle’s nest on the southeast shore of Cutover Island as you approach by boat—it’s a sight you won’t want to miss. For trip planning, it’s approximately a 15 minute boat ride from Northern Lights Resort dock.

2) Locator Lake Trail

For those looking for a bit more solitude and adventure, the Locator Lake Trail is an excellent option. Located on the west end of Lake Kabetogama, this 2-hour hike begins at a boat-accessible trailhead. The path winds through dense forest and across a scenic boardwalk that spans an active beaver dam—keep your eyes peeled for signs of beaver activity! For the more adventurous, consider renting a boat through the VNP recreation.gov to explore and fish this interior lake. The tranquility and remoteness make it a true nature-lover’s paradise. For trip planning, it’s approximately a 20 minute boat ride from Northern Lights Resort dock.

2) Lost Bay and Cruiser Lake Trailhead

Continue further for a 4-6 hour day hike into the Cruiser Lake backcountry, or, if you’re up for a real challenge, bring your camping gear and through-hike all the way to Rainy Lake. Another great option is the Ek Lake loop trail, which offers a similar adventure to Locator Lake. Here, too, you can rent a boat from VNP to explore and fish this serene, secluded spot.
