Before You Ride
Check trail conditions
Trail conditions change throughout the winter. Local snowmobile clubs and Voyageurs park staff maintain the groomed routes, marked lake trails, and shelters. The trail system around Kabetogama connects to International Falls, Baudette, Bemidji, Ely, the North Shore, and even the Ontario trail network, which makes it possible to plan both short outings and long-distance rides.

Top Day Trips in Northern Minnesota
Arrowhead Trail
Distance: About 75 miles
Terrain: Groomed forest trail with rolling hills
Why riders pick it: Remote scenery, river crossings, and multiple shelter stops
This route runs from Cook to International Falls. It is one of the most classic long-distance rides in the region, offering a full day on quiet backcountry terrain with wide views and long stretches of untouched winter landscape.
Voyageur Trail to Crane Lake
Distance: Loop of more than 50 miles
Terrain: Lake and forest trail
Why riders pick it: Frozen lake crossings, wilderness views, and access to Crane Lake
This loop carries you across Namakan Lake and down the Ash River Trail. Crane Lake offers several places to stop for lunch before returning on the same loop or branching out to additional groomed routes.
Voyageurs Chain of Lakes Trail
Distance: 13.2 miles
Terrain: Tight, winding forest trail with one-way traffic
Why riders pick it: Wildlife sightings, narrow wooded sections, and views of backcountry lakes
This is a shorter but more technical ride. The entrance sits near the west end of Kabetogama Lake. Riders should stay on the staked route because of the possibility of thin ice or open water in unmarked areas.
Local Kabetogama Trails
Popular nearby routes include Peterson Bay Trail, Woody’s Trail, 3K Trail, Kab West Trail, and the Five Mile Scenic Family Loop. These are good options for riders who want a shorter outing, a family ride, or a relaxed winter morning trip before lunch.
Trails Beyond Voyageurs Region
Our extensive Voyageurs Region trails are much more than just “lake trails” – routes head out one way and return by a completely different trail.
The extensive miles of lakes and trails from your lodging front door span thousands of miles. Our Kabetogama trail system also connects to:
- International Falls trails to the northwest
- Baudette to the northwest
- Bemidji to the southwest
- Ely to the northeast and the North Shore of Lake Superior
- Plus north to the Ontario Canada trail system too! Insider Tip: get your border pass at local Kab establishments.
