Families return to this corner of northern Minnesota because life slows down the moment you turn off Highway 53. The pine air feels crisp, the lake stretches out in every direction, and the quiet makes it easy to notice things you usually miss. This guide brings together what travelers ask most often, along with the details locals share when friends come to visit. It focuses on summer experiences around Voyageurs and the features that make Northern Lights Resort and Outfitting a comfortable home base for families who want a simple, peaceful stay.

Why families choose Lake Kabetogama

Lake Kabetogama sits along the southern edge of Voyageurs National Park. It is one of the few national parks where travel happens mainly on water. Families come for the easy access to wilderness, the open sky, and the safe sense of adventure. Most activities begin right from the resort or within a short drive.

You can spend the morning on the trails, the afternoon on the lake, then sit by a fire while the kids explore the beach or follow a treasure hunt from the Youth Quest program.

Summer at Kabetogama

Simple lake days and easy adventures

Summer is the season most families picture when they think of northern Minnesota. Long daylight, calm water in the bays, and enough activities to fill a week without feeling rushed.

At NLRO, both beginners and youth enjoy paddling in our private bay that sets us apart from the neighbors. We offer free-use of kayaks & canoes during your cabin stay. The protected waterways surrounding the resort are calm even on the most windy days. Our private sandy beach is a delightful setting for parents to lounge while the kids romp.

What summer activities do kids enjoy most

Kids who stay at the resort gravitate to the water, the trails, and the Youth Quest program.

The NLRO Youth Quest program

Northern Lights Resort and Outfitting is the only resort within roughly a hundred miles that offers scheduled youth activities. These sessions give kids a chance to build boats out of found materials, join nature scavenger hunts, learn simple outdoor skills, and connect with other kids staying at the resort. Parents appreciate the structure. Kids appreciate the freedom.

A downloadable Youth Activity Guide is available at no cost. It helps families plan their stay around what their kids enjoy most. A free Northern Lights coloring book is also available for younger children who want something quiet for rainy afternoons.

Boating and Paddling

Most families spend at least a day exploring the islands by boat. The water is dotted with sheltered coves that feel perfect for picnics or short hikes. Kayaks and canoes let you slip into narrow channels where loons and otters often feed.

Fishing

Kabetogama has steady action for walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and panfish. Kids often catch their first fish right off the resort dock.

Hiking

The Blind Ash Bay Trail, Sullivan Bay Trail, and Echo Bay Trail offer terrain suitable for families. Expect boardwalks, rocky overlooks, and quiet forest loops.

Insider Tip: There is a paved path suitable for short legs or strollers that is a handicap accessible trail to see the Kabetogama Overlook’s sweeping views–it shares the same parking lot as the Blind Ash Bay Trail.

Evenings at the resort

Kids tend to migrate to the beachfront, the playground, or the lodge library of movies and books. Each cabin includes a DVD player. Satellite TV is intentionally limited. Guests often tell us this is the first place their children forget about screens.

With a private fire ring at every cabin, you hear laughter & giggling rippling through the resort as families share vacation memories around the fire with a s’more or drink of choice!

Yes. You can hike multiple trails, visit the Kabetogama Visitor Center, or arrange boat tours. Many guests rent a boat for only one or two days and spend the rest of the time on land based activities.

Do the cabins have Wi Fi

Yes, but coverage is intentionally limited so families can unplug and enjoy outdoor time together.

What should we pack for a summer stay

Bring comfortable layers, sunscreen, water shoes for rocky shorelines, and a light jacket for evenings. Kids benefit from simple outdoor gear like small backpacks and reusable water bottles.

Is the Youth Activity Guide free
