MN Boating License: What It Means for You as an NLRO Guest

Updated for the 2025 Season

Starting July 1, 2025, Minnesota has a new boating license law that affects who can legally operate a motorized watercraft in the state. At Northern Lights Resort, we want all our guests, Minnesota locals and out-of-state visitors alike, to stay safe, informed, and legal while enjoying beautiful Lake Kabetogama.

New Law: Boating License Now Required for MN Residents

As of July 1, 2025, Minnesota residents age 18 and older are required to hold a valid watercraft operator’s permit to operate a motorized boat. This change is part of a statewide push to improve water safety and ensure everyone using a motorboat knows the basics of operation and navigation.

What About Our Resort Guests?

Let’s break it down clearly:

If you’re a NON-RESIDENT (you live outside Minnesota):

  • You do NOT need a MN boating license to rent or operate a boat from NLRO
  • You’re allowed to use watercraft in Minnesota for up to 60 days without a permit

If you’re a MINNESOTA RESIDENT:

  • You ARE required to have a valid MN boating license/permit to operate a boat after July 1, 2025
  • You can still rent boats at NLRO, but operating one without a valid permit may lead to fines or enforcement action by DNR officers

What About Teens?

Under age 18? Minnesota law prohibits anyone under 18 from renting a motorized watercraft, regardless of where they live.

NLRO FAQ – Boating License Edition

Can I rent a boat at NLRO without a boating license?

  • Yes, if you’re a non-resident (visiting from out of state)
  • If you’re a Minnesota resident, you can rent, but you should have your watercraft permit. Operating without one may result in a fine

Does this affect kids riding in the boat? No. The law only applies to operating the boat, not passengers.

Is the permit hard to get? Not at all! The DNR course is online, easy to follow, and includes great safety tips. Many complete it in just a few hours.
