Adventure Hiking at it’s best in Northern Minnesota
Back Country Hiking in Minnesota
Accessible only by boat makes the hiking trails on the Kabetogama Peninsula an adventure to explore. The most extensive remote trail system in Voyageurs National Park is the Cruiser Lake Trails. The Cruiser Lake Trail system is a through hike across the Kabetogama Peninsula from the north shore of Lake Kabetogama to the south shore of Rainy Lake with Cruiser Lake near the midpoint.
As Tracy can attest, hiking this stretch of trails you are truly able to experience Voyageurs country, from tranquil wetlands and rugged shorelines to windswept cliffs. You hear only the sound of nature and rarely see another person on the trail. It’s also your best bet to track and see Moose.

There are back country campsites and several interior lakes within the Kabetogama Peninsula. You can reserve both a campsite and a canoe with the National Park and pick up a key for the boat prior to your departure. This helps eliminate lengthy portages that is common in the BWCA. In fact, to keep the interior lakes pristine and free of invasive species you are not allowed to bring your own boat. Fish for dinner and have a shore lunch!
