Lake Kabetogama Group Travel Guide

Here at Northern Lights Resort, we’ve hosted everything from family reunions and fishing groups to corporate retreats and multi-family vacations. One thing we’ve learned over the years is that there’s nothing quite like watching people relax and reconnect on the peaceful shores of Lake Kabetogama. If you’re planning a group trip to the North Woods, we’d love to share a few tips to help you make the most of it, whether your group is small or large.

Why Lake Kabetogama is Ideal for Groups

Lake Kabetogama sits along the southern edge of Voyageurs National Park, surrounded by forests, islands, and quiet water. It’s a beautiful mix of wild and welcoming, which makes it perfect for group getaways. Kab is considered the convenient “central entrance” of Voyageurs, providing easy access to explore all corners of Voyageurs National Park.

You can spend the morning fishing, take an afternoon pontoon ride, or relax on the deck with a good book. It’s easy to fill your days with adventure or slow them down and simply enjoy the stillness.

At night, you might hear the call of a loon across the bay or see the northern lights shining over the pines. It’s a setting that brings people together in the best way.

Our Favorite Tip for Group Travel

One of the best things about staying with us is that you can plan your lodging to match your group’s style. We offer spacious four and five-bedroom cabins that give everyone plenty of room to spread out. These cabins come with full kitchens, multiple bathrooms, large decks, and beautiful lake views.

Many groups also love booking a cluster of cabins near each other. This lets families or friends have their own private spaces while still being close enough to gather easily. Parents can relax on one deck while the kids play nearby, and everyone can come together for meals, bonfires, and boat rides.

We’re always happy to help you choose a set of cabins that fits your group’s size and needs. Some of our most popular combinations include the:

  • Bear Cabin, Sunset Cabin, Bass Cabin
  • Woodside and Treehouse Lofts
  • Teton Lodge and Northern Cabin
  • Caribou Cabin and Eagles Nest
  • Moose and Muskie Lodges
  • You can see all of our cabin options right here.

What to Know Before You Arrive

Plan early
Lake Kabetogama is a popular summer and fall destination, so we always recommend booking your cabins well in advance. That way, we can keep everyone close together and help you find the perfect setup.

Organize before you arrive
It helps to decide who’s staying where and who’s bringing what before your trip. Assign a few simple roles for food, boat rentals, or meal planning so everyone can relax once you’re here.

Decide how you want to handle meals
Each of our cabins has a full kitchen, so cooking for your group is easy. Some groups like to share meals together while others prefer to split up and enjoy quiet family dinners. We also offer custom meal plans for groups that want to make things even simpler or partner with our favorite local caterer who will bring her food truck on property to provide food for your group events!

Activities That Groups Love

Lake Kabetogama has something for everyone, no matter the age or interest level in your group.

Fishing and boating
We’re known for world-class fishing and easy access to some of the best walleye and northern pike waters in Minnesota. You can rent one of our boats or bring your own and head out to explore the lake’s many islands.

Beach time and water fun
Families love our private sandy beach and floating water park. We also have kayaks and paddleboards available for guests, and they’re a great way to explore the shoreline at your own pace.

Scheduled resort activities

Ranging from an Ice Cream Social with all the fixings to build your own sundae to Scavenger Hunts and crafts to Minnow races there is good ole family fun for all ages.

Evenings by the fire
Once the sun goes down, the best place to be is around a campfire by the lake. Bring marshmallows, share stories, and take in the stars above. On clear nights, you might even see the northern lights. Every cabin has access to a private fire pit or ring!

Hiking and exploring
Voyageurs National Park offers wonderful trails and wildlife viewing opportunities. Bring your camera and binoculars. It’s not unusual to spot eagles, deer, or even otters while you’re out and about.

Relaxation and quiet time
Not every group moment needs to be busy. Some of our guests love early morning fishing trips, while others prefer quiet afternoons on the deck. However your group recharges, there’s a spot for it here. Relax with a lawn game like horse shoes, bocce ball, bags/corn hole, or badminton. Prefer something a bit more luxurious? Sunbathe on our private sandy beach or in our sauna!
