To help you make the most of your time on the water, we’ve rounded up our top fishing tips, the best hotspots, and some expert advice straight from local guides.

General Fishing Tips

Follow the Wind

Fish follow their food, and baitfish are naturally pushed by the wind. Target the windward side of islands and shorelines where walleye, pike, and bass are actively feeding.

Fish the Currents

Lake Kabetogama has over 70 natural currents, making them prime locations for walleye and pike. On the west end of the lake, check out:

  • Hacksaw Pass
  • The mouth of Gold Portage, where water flows downstream across the Kabetogama Peninsula

Water Temperature Matters

Walleye move deeper as the water warms from spring into summer. Early in the season, fish shallow waters (3-8 feet). As summer progresses, move to 15-30 feet, depending on temperature and conditions.

Top Fishing Tip

Move On! If you aren’t spotting fish, head out to the next spot. With the large variety of forage and extensive structure to explore, it’s better to keep moving than stay in one spot for too long.

Top Tackle Tips

No matter what style of fishing you prefer, one rule holds true: your bait must reach the bottom. A tried-and-true favorite is the Lindy Rig, which is highly effective on Kab’s walleye. Other essentials include:

  • Jigs (chartreuse and pink are local favorites)
  • Rapalas (Shad Raps and Husky Jerks work well)
  • Live bait (minnows, leeches, and nightcrawlers)
